The drawbacks of punishment are plentiful, for example:
• It is associated with the person who dishes out punishment - not the unwanted behavior
• It lacks an instruction of what to do instead
• The punisher is perceived negatively
• The relationship could be damaged
• Risk of bad atmosphere and distrust
Threatening, frightening and withdrawing fun activities can lead to obedience. However, the price is high, so punishments should be avoided.
